AN EXAMPLE OF GONG BI PAINTING STEPS:

Picture
1. An outline is drawn using brush calligraphy method on paper or     silk with varying ink tones (i.e. light tone for flowers, medium tone for leaves, dark tone for tree branches, stones or rocks) and varying thickness of the brush strokes.

2. Apply a coat of paint as under-painting (building foundation) to create a 3-dimensional effect.
  • For example:
  • For light color flowers, a light mixture of white paint and water
  • For leaves, a mix of indigo + light ink
  • For dark color (red) flowers, medium to dark ink

3. After the under-painting is complete, the appropriate paint is   applied one or more times until the desired effect is achieved.
